Afternoon Tea is one of my favorite things to do at the Biltmore. For those who enjoy hot tea and have a sweet tooth, there is no place in Western North Carolina like it. My wife and I first experienced tea at the Biltmore after visiting London. This tea service rivaled some of England's best where tea has been served since the 19th century.
They have recently changed and added a few items to the course in the later part of 2013. Below is the current course schedule:
1. Ordering - Once seated, the hostess will present you with a tea box filled with tea selections from Mighty Leaf Tea Company. The tea selections may vary: Brazilian Fruit, Assam Gold Leaf, Leaves of Provence, White Lotus, Mayan Chocolate Truffle, Dragonwell, Organic Mint Melange, Coco Chai, White Blossoms & Berries. These teas are sorted by level of caffeine. Once you meet your server, you will select your tea service: Full Tea or Royale Tea (Full Tea with Sparkling Wine) and your tea selection.
2. Amuse Bouche - This is a bite-sized, seasonal hors d’œuvre from the chef. This treat ranges in variety but it does not disappoint.
3. Tea Service - Each person in your party will receive their own pot of loose leaf tea. Your first cup of tea is poured for you by your server and served with sugar cubes, milk, lemon and honey. Remember to use the strainer!
4. Finger Sandwiches - Each person in your party will receive a plate filled with 6 assorted sandwiches. The sandwich selection are seasonal but here are some examples: chicken salad, cucumber, quiche, salmon, etc. If someone in your party has any allergies or is a vegetarian, note it on the reservation.
5. Cheese Plate / Dessert Tier - Lastly, the table is presented with an a three tiered dessert tray. This tray has three main components: seasonal scones, pound cake and an assorted plate. The assorted plate typically has truffles, cake bites, tarts, and macaroons - this selection will vary. One nice touch with this course is the selection of various jams and sweet cremes: devonshire cream, lemon curd, and strawberry jam. The cheese plate has three cheeses, nuts and fruit.
Tips:
1. Parties of two have a better shot of having a seat next to the windows overlooking Anter Hill Village and the Winery.
2. Reserve your table at least 7 days in advance.
3. Use your passholder discount for 10% off.
4. Use OpenTable.com to avoid holding on the phone to make a reservation.
5. In the winter months, make sure to get their early to enjoy the fireplace and live piano music.
